This one comes from nowhere.
Cadet Arlen Vega survives the wreck of the Callisto only to find himself stranded on an uncharted world of ochre dust and towering crystal fields. His oxygen is failing, and an injured crewmate is counting on him.
The only person who answers is Jace Vasquez, a Fleet officer who should be far beyond the reach of Vega’s damaged transmitter.
Jace helps him find air, food, and shelter. Between repair checks and ration counts, they trade bad jokes and old stories. Both begin looking forward to hearing the other’s voice.
Then patterns from the crystal fields begin appearing inside the signal.
With life support failing and the interference growing, Jace is determined to bring them home. Whatever is happening on that world, neither man is willing to let the channel go silent.
